Pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum: Results of the Fontan procedure
-
16 Najm HK, Williams WG, Coles JG, Rebeyka IM, Freedom RM: Pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum: results of the Fontan procedure. Ann Thorac Surg 1997, 63:669-675. Twenty-two patients with PA/IVS underwent a Fontan procedure over a 14-year period. Included with these patients were five patients with right ventricle-dependent coronary circulation. Early mortality was 13% and 10-year actuarial survival was 80%. All hospital mortalities occurred prior to the advent of the fenestrated lateral tunnel Fontan modification. Satisfactory results despite inclusion of earlier Fontan variants predict even better survival in ongoing studies of Fontan outcomes.

The Fontan procedure for pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum: Operative and late results
-
41 Mair DD, Julsrud PR, Puga FJ, Danielson GK: The Fontan procedure for pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum: operative and late results. J Am Coll Cardiol 1997, 29:1359-1364. From 1979 to 1995, 40 patients with PA/IVS underwent a Fontan procedure. Followup functional results taken at 4 to 30 years (median, 13 years) were examined according to the NYHA classification, cardiac medication, and employment. Thirty-three of 34 survivors were in NYHA class I to II, and more than half of these patients received no cardiovascular medications. These data span a period that preceded some modifications to the Fontan procedure that is presently employed and predict even better outcomes in followup after Fontain procedure in more recent studies.

Partial biventricular repair for complex congenital heart defects: An intermediate option for complicated anatomy of functionally borderline right complex heart
-
52 Reddy VM, McElhinney DB, Silverman NH, Marianeschi SM, Hanley FL: Partial biventricular repair for complex congenital heart defects: an intermediate option for complicated anatomy of functionally borderline right complex heart. J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 1998, 116:21-27. Twenty-three patients with hypoplastic right ventricles underwent a variety of one-and-a-half ventricle repairs, including BDG and an intracardiac repair, to effect a complete separation of pulmonary and systemic circulations. At median 17-month follow-up, no late deaths had occurred, and all patients were NYHA class I.
