The keto group of 10 was partially hydrated but a crystalline compound was obtained by 1) Wittig homologation of 10 to the corresponding α,β-unsaturated methyl ester 2) dihydroxylation. Single crystal X-Ray diffraction studies of this compound confirmed the structure proposed for 10.
