This important study used a symptom questionnaire to investigate risk factors for the onset of acute retention of urine amongst community-dwelling men. The study found that the presence of LUTS, reduced maximum flow rate and an enlarged prostate were all associated with an increased risk of acute retention amongst community-dwelling men, and that the specific symptoms of repeated urination and intermittency were predictive in younger men.

In this study, the authors compared the DAN-PSS, I-PSS, Madsen-Iversen and Boyarsky symptom questionnaires in patients randomly allocated to alfuzosin or placebo in a double-blind clinical trial, or allocated to thermotherapy. The authors claim that the DAN-PSS was more sensitive than the I-PSS to changes after pharmacological and thermotherapy, although their methods of comparison were not entirely clear.
