This work shows that monocytes have at least two potential fates: either they give rise to (myeloid) DCs by transendothelial migration or they become macrophages if they stay in the subendothelial matrix.

    • Albert ML, Sauter B, Bhardwaj N: Dendritic cells acquire antigen from apoptotic cells and induce class I restricted CTLs. Nature 1998, 392:86-89. Albert et al. demonstrate that DCs, but not macrophages, are able to acquire exogenous antigen from apoptotic cells and present it efficiently on MHC class I molecules. This would explain how exogenous material gets access to the endogenous pathway of antigen-presentation and offers one potential explanation for the phenomenon of cross-presentation.
