Structural vascular changes in hypertension: Role of angiotensin II, dietary sodium supplementation, blood pressure and time
-
Simon G, Illyes G, Csiky B. Structural vascular changes in hypertension: role of angiotensin II, dietary sodium supplementation, blood pressure and time. Hypertension 1998; 32:654-660. The development of structural vascular changes in angiotensin II-treated rats is not only dose-dependent but also time-dependent, that is, a lesser dose of angiotensin II applied long enough may produce the same changes as a larger dose administered for a shorter period of time.

Csiky B, Simon G. Synergistic vascular effects of dietary sodium supplementation and angiotensin II administration. Am J Physiol 1997; 273:H1275-1282. The authors found that short-term administration of a high sodium diet to Sprague-Dawley rats potentiated vasoconstrictor responses to angiotensin II by facilitating sympathetic neurotransmission, and the long-term administration of a high sodium diet raised systolic blood pressure by potentiating the trophic vascular effects of angiotensin II.
