Cappuccio FP, Markandu ND, Carney C, Sagnella GA, MacGregor GA. Double-blind randomized trial of modest salt restriction in older people. Lancet 1997; 350:850-854. This is a double blind randomized study that examines the effect of modest salt restriction (from 10 to 5 g) on blood pressure in 47 untreated elderly people. A modest restriction in salt intake resulted in a fall in blood pressure from 163/90 to 156/87.

The link among nitric oxide synthase activity, endothelial function, and aortic and ventricular hypertrophy in hypertension
-
Hayakawa H, Raij L. The link among nitric oxide synthase activity, endothelial function, and aortic and ventricular hypertrophy in hypertension. Hypertension 1997; 29:235-241. This study examines the relationship between LVH, salt sensitivity and aortic NOS activity in spontaneous hypertensive rats and Dahl salt-sensitive rats matched for blood pressure and age. Compared with SHRs, Dahl salt-sensitive rats failed to upregulate NOS in response to hypertension, and developed aortic hypertrophy and LVH.

Nitric oxide synthase activity and renal injury in genetic hypertension

Hayakawa H, Raij L. Nitric oxide synthase activity and renal injury in genetic hypertension. Hypertension 1998; 31:266-270. This study investigates the relationship between salt sensitivity, renal NOS activity and glomerular and tubulointerstitial injury. Compared with SHRs, Dahl salt-sensitive rats have lower renal NOS activity, despite hypertension of similar severity and duration. They also had a ninefold increased incidence of glomerular injury and 20-fold more tubulointerstitial injury.

Impairment of endothelial function in salt-sensitive hypertension in human
-
Miyoshi A, Suzuki H, Fujiwara M, Masai M, Iwasaki T. Impairment of endothelial function in salt-sensitive hypertension in human. Am J Hypertens 1997; 10:1083-1090 This study examines the relationship between endothelium-dependent vasodilation and salt sensitivity in patients with essential hypertension. Compared with salt-resistant patients, salt-sensitive subjects showed a reduced endothelium-dependent vasodilation in response to acetylcholine. This suggests that endothelial function is impaired in salt-sensitive hypertensive individuals.

Sodium sensitivity and cardiovascular events in patients with essential hypertension
-
Morimoto A, Uzu T, Fujii T, Nishimura M, Kuroda S, Nakamura S. Sodium sensitivity and cardiovascular events in patients with essential hypertension. Lancet 1997, 350:1734-1737. In 62 salt-sensitive and 94 non-salt-sensitive patients, LVH and cardiovascular events occurred more frequently in the salt-sensitive group. Salt sensitivity was also found to be an independent cardiovascular risk factor.
