This is not to deny that many studies have estimated earnings functions separately by sex. However, we have found only three that carry out formal decomposition analyses of the gender gap.

note

This difference in age ranges may cause problems of comparability between the surveys. However, in response to the suggestion of a referee, we restricted the Ivorian and Ugandan samples to those over 25 years of age (results not reported but available on request). We found similar parameter estimates and variable means - with the obvious exception of the potential experience variables. Consequently, we are confident that the results are robust to age effects.

Family Background, Education and Employment in Urban Ethiopia
-
For example, at the recommendation of a referee, we excluded variables for parental occupation and education from the earnings functions. When included directly in the earnings functions, these had a large effect in Ethiopia (see P. Krishnan, "Family Background, Education and Employment in Urban Ethiopia," Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics 58 [1996]: 167-83). Excluding them from the earnings functions but not the logits (as in this article) increases the significance of the selectivity terms.

See Oaxaca (n. 9 above); and Oaxaca and Ransom (n. 10 above). The parameter estimates used to generate these results are based on the wage equations reported in appendix tables Al-A4. (The multinomial logits used to derive the predicted probabilities and the inverse Mill's ratios are not reported here; they are available on request.)

note
-
In reality, large scale retrenchments are likely to be associated with changes in the earnings structure. Retrenchment would be selective, but we have no information on the criteria likely to be used in the process.

ij], where Φ(.) and Φ(.) denote the density and cumulative distribution functions, respectively, of the standard normal distribution. The presence of the additional constructed selectivity correction renders the standard errors incorrect. In the empirical work, White's standard errors were used to provide asymptotically consistent values (see H. White, "A Heteroscedasticity Consistent Covariance Matrix and a Direct Test for Heteroscedasticity," Econometrica 46 [1978]: 817-38).
