    • Chongwe was, inter alia, six years Chairperson of the Law Association of Zambia, and had also been President of the African Bar Association, and President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association. He had been Minister of Legal Affairs, then Local Government, in the MMD Government. When he fell out with Chiluba, the Zambian Government could, at that time, have nominated him to the International Court of Justice and, thus, removed a thorn from its side, but could not bring itself to stomach the prestige this would have conferred on Chongwe

    • A pretty exact description of Mandaza's then publishing base - although, in a bald irony, he made this statement in one of Mandaza's own journals. Quoted in Southern African Review of Books, Vol 5, No 1, issue 23, 1993, p 19.

    • Such literature as exists has had its own genealogy, from S. E. Finer, The Man on Horseback, Pall Mall Press, London, 1962; to recent work on democracy and military rôles within it. See Larry Diamond, Juan Linz and Seymour Martin Lipset (eds), Politics in Developing Countries, Lynne Rienner, Boulder, 1990. In between, there have been all manner of unusual approaches to build models of civil-military relations, some more well-known than others, eg Yaw Agyeman-Badu and Kwaku Osei-Hwedie, The Political Economy of Instability, Brunswick, Laurenceville, 1982; and revisionist tracts, eg Stephen Chan, 'The Study of African Coups - Some Notes for a Fresh Approach', Royal United Services Institute Journal for Defence Studies, Vol 129, No 4, 1984. However, nothing deeply investigates the link indicated in the text, above. 'Relative deprivation' is a term coined by Ted Gurr, Why Men Rebel, Princeton University Press, Princeton, 1970.
