    • By "chemical matrix" is meant a preferentially organic compound that is either a liquid or that dissolves homogeneously in a suitable solvent and that simultaneously acts as the light absorber and interacts with the analyte in the ion-formation process. For "suspension matrixes" the two functions appear to be split between the particles (absorption) and ionization (liquid, possibly a liquid surface interaction).
