So far, I have not been able to find a comprehensive study that compares the quality of machines used in those two economies. However, historically it is well known that most Taiwanese farm machines were imported from Japan. See Francesca Bray, The Rice Economies: Technology and Development in Asian Societies (Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1986), esp. p. 59.

note
-
Taiwanese primary costs were deflated by the price index of payments made by farmers for agricultural production inputs, and Japanese primary costs were deflated by the price index of rice.

To compute the group mean for each farm size group, only the total sample size is available in Koine oyobi Mugirui no Seisanhi (Survey of rice production costs), Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (Tokyo, 1985-91). However, since the average data on farm size for the Non-Hokkaido region and the Hokkaido region are available, I can estimate the sample size of the Non-Hokkaido region farms by solving simple linear programming.
