Side effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on the small and large intestine in humans
-
Bjarnason I, Hayllar J, MacPherson AJ, Russell AS. Side effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on the small and large intestine in humans. Gastroenterology 1993; 104:1832-1847. An exhaustive review of the literature from the authors who have published the greatest number of papers on this topic. A systematic search has been made through Medline and Embase to identify possible adverse effects of NSAIDs on the small and large intestine. The clinical implications and pathogenesis are particularly well detailed.

Use of anti-inflammatory drugs by patients admitted with small or large bowel perforations and haemorrhage
-
Langman MJ, Morgan L, Worrall A. Use of anti-inflammatory drugs by patients admitted with small or large bowel perforations and haemorrhage. BMJ 1985; 290:347-349. This large retrospective study involves 268 patients admitted for colonic or small bowel perforation or haemorrhage who were compared with a control group of patients matched for age and sex admitted with uncomplicated lower bowel disease. The authors showed that patients with perforation or haemorrhage are more than twice as likely to be takers of NSAIDs.
