The effect of digoxin on mortality and morbidity in patients with heart failure
-
The Digitalis Investigation Group. The effect of digoxin on mortality and morbidity in patients with heart failure. N Engl J Med 1997; 336:525-533. In this large, randomized trial, digoxin did not decrease mortality (relative risk 0.99, P =0.80) compared with placebo in patients treated with ACE inhibitors and diuretics but fewer patients were hospitalized for CHF in the digoxin group (relative risk 0.72, P< 0.001). This study provides strong evidence for the safety of digoxin in the treatment of CHF and its effect in decreasing hospitalizations.
