Convenient and economic treatment J Clin Gastro-enterol 23 1996 50 52 In an urban center in Israel, 2934 patients with second- and third-degree hemorrhoids were treated by rubber band ligation, usually one ligation per session. Seventy-nine percent were completely cured, 18% needed one or more additional sessions of treatment, and 2.1% failed and were referred for hemorrhoidectomy. Rubber band ligation is a safe and convenient treatment and avoids operation in the majority of patients

    • Comparison of hemorrhoidal treatments: a meta-analysis
    • HM MacRae RS McLeod Comparison of hemorrhoidal treatments: a meta-analysis Dis Colon Rectum 38 1995 687 694 The data in this article come from a meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials assessing two or more treatment modalities for symptomatic hemorrhoids. Rubber band ligation appeared to be the best initial mode of therapy for grade 1 to 3 hemorrhoids. It was associated with better responses and fewer failures than sclerotherapy and infrared coagulation. Operative hemorrhoidectomy was significantly more effective than all other methods but was also associated with more complications and pain. Thus it should be reserved for patients with fourth-degree hemorrhoids, with extensive third-degree hemorrhoids, and for those patients whose hemorrhoids fail to respond to rubber band ligation

    • M Perez-Miranda A Gomez-Cedenilla T Léon-Colombo J Pajares J Mate-Jimenez Effect of fiber supplements on internal bleeding hemorrhoids Hepatogastroenterology 43 1996 1504 1507 Patients were randomized to receive a fiber supplement or a placebo for a 15-day course before more definitive treatment of their hemorrhoids. The addition of a fiber supplement decreased bleeding episodes, the number of congested columns, and contact bleeding during examination. There was no difference in the degree of prolapse. Although the treatment period was brief, this article confirms the usefulness of adding fiber to the diet as an adjuvant therapy for hemorrhoids
