    • 1H NMR spectrum of the crude concentrated product after the usual workup in each case indicated the presence of at least 60% of the unreacted keto ester, formation of the desired product 6 in low yield (<10%), formation of the dimer of mvk i.e. 3-methylene-2,6-heptanedione as a major product, and some other side products).
