The obligatory role of endothelial cells in the relaxation of arterial smooth muscle by acetylcholine
-
Furchgott RF, Zawadski JV. The obligatory role of endothelial cells in the relaxation of arterial smooth muscle by acetylcholine. Nature 1980; 288:373-376. A seminal animal study that demonstrated that exposure of isolated rabbit aorta to acetylcholine caused vasodilatation if the endothelium was intact, but vasoconstriction if the endothelium was removed. This landmark study established the field of EDRF/NO.

Vascular wall renin angiotensin pathway in control of the circulation
-
Dzau VJ. Vascular wall renin angiotensin pathway in control of the circulation. Am J Med 1984; 77:31-36. This review describes the features of the vascular wall renin-angiotensin system and its role in cardiovascular homeostasis. Endogenous nitric oxide inhibits human platelet adhesion to vascular endothelium
-
Radomski MW, Palmer RM, Moncada S. Endogenous nitric oxide inhibits human platelet adhesion to vascular endothelium. Lancet 1987;ii:1057-1058. The adhesion of human platelets to monolayers of bovine endothelial cells in culture was studied to determine the role of endothelium-derived nitric oxide in the regulation of adhesion of platelets. The results show that release of nitric oxide contributes to the nonadhesive properties of vascular endothelium.

Acceleration of thrombin-antithrombin complex formation in rat hindquarters via heparinlike molecules bound to the endothelium
-
Marcum JA, McKenney, Rosenberg RD. Acceleration of thrombin-antithrombin complex formation in rat hindquarters via heparinlike molecules bound to the endothelium. J Clin Invest 1984; 74:341-350. The authors demonstrate that contact of the hemostatic components with the endothelium enhances the rate of formation of thrombin-antithrombin complex: Heparin-like molecules present on the vascular endothelium are responsible for the antithrombin-accelerating activity.

Creager MA, Cooke JP, Mendelsohn ME, Gallagher SJ, Coleman SM, Loscalzo J, et al. Impaired vasodilation of forearm resistance vessels in hypercholesterolemic humans. J Clin Invest 1990; 86:228-234. Forearm resistance vasodilator responses to methacholine and nitroprusside in 13 patients with hypercholesterolemia were blunted compared with those in 11 normal subjects. This shows that the effect of nitrovasodilators, including endothelium-derived relaxing factor, on the vascular smooth muscle of resistance vessels is less than normal in humans with hypercholesterolemia.

Beneficial effects of cholesterol-lowering therapy on the coronary endothelium in patients with coronary artery disease. N Engl J Med 1995; 332:481-487.
