In this study the authors analyzed data from the landmark MacArthur Violence Risk Assessment Study to compare rates of violence among mentally ill, mentally ill and substance-abusing, and nonmentally ill persons living in the same community. Individuals were monitored for violent acts for 1 year after discharge from a psychiatric hospital.

The authors studied the determinants of violent behavior in a sample of 331 adults with severe mental disorders enrolled in a community-based treatment program.

A limited number of notifications were made, usually by nondoctoral staff at state inpatient facilities.

Soc Psychiatry Psychiatr Epidemiol 1998; 33 (Suppl 1):S95-S101. The authors followed 169 mentally ill persons for 30 months, and assessed for violence acts. Of these subjects 39% committed or threatened violent acts during the study period.

A replication study of violent and nonviolent subjects: cerebrospinal fluid metabolites of serotonin and dopamine are predicted by plasma essential fatty acids. Biol Psychiatry 1998; 44:243-249. In this study it was determined that a negative correlation exists between cerebrospinal fluid 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid and plasma docosahexaenoic acid levels, which may be responsive to dietary supplementation.
