What we know and do not know about assessing and treating sex offenders
-
6 Becker JV, Murphy WD. What we know and do not know about assessing and treating sex offenders. Psychol Publ Policy Law 1998; 4:116-137. This paper reviews clinical and empiric literature and standards of assessment/ treatment with regard to the new sex offender laws, focusing on issues of diagnosis, appropriate treatment, post-treatment continuity of services, and the need for validated risk criteria. This is a highly informative and intelligently written synthesis of a variety of extremely important issues brought to life by Kansas versus Hendricks.

Are sex offenders treatable? A research overview
-
7 Grossman LS, Martin B, Fichtner CG. Are sex offenders treatable? A research overview. Psychiatr Serv 1999; 50:349-361. This is an extremely comprehensive and synthetic description of the problems inherent in research on sex offenders, types of treatments available, and outcome results. The authors call for vigorous commitment to ongoing research, to guide future treatment efforts developing as a result of the new sex offender laws.

Sexual recidivism in sex offenders
-
11 Greenberg DM. Sexual recidivism in sex offenders. Can J Psychiatry 1998; 43:459-464. This paper provides an overview of recidivism rates for sex offenders, pointing out methodologic diversities across studies that impede generalization. Greenberg summarizes the literature as indicating that, overall, treatment decreases recidivism.

Appraisal and management of risk in sexual aggressors: Implications for criminal justice policy
-
12 Harris GT, Rice ME, Quinsey VL. Appraisal and management of risk in sexual aggressors: implications for criminal justice policy. Psychol Publ Policy Law 1998; 4:73-115. This paper presents a review of factors associated with recidivism, actuarial prediction, and treatment. The authors argue that existing data do not support the view that treatment reduces risk. Because this is such an extremely pessimistic view, readers are urged to pay careful attention to the details illuminated in this paper and to weigh them against other more optimistic readings of the literature.

Paedophilia: Pathology, criminality, or both? The development of a multivariate model of offense behaviour in child sexual abuse
-
22 Canter D, Hughes D, Kirby S. Paedophilia: pathology, criminality, or both? The development of a multivariate model of offense behaviour in child sexual abuse. J Forens Psychiatry 1998; 9:532-555. This paper provides empiric support for a typology of child molesters as aggressive, intimate, or criminal-opportunistic by analyzing crime scene data from 97 offensive acts. Although the results are interesting, the statistics used in the analysis are obscure and difficult to comprehend.
