No consistent or significant changes in deduced amino acid sequences of NSP4 were found between virulent and avirulent murine rotavirus strains. Homologous knockout mice (missing the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator), which do not respond to known intestinal secretagogues, exhibited as much diarrhoea as cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator-positive littermates when infected with rotavirus.
