Recoverin-associated retinopathy: A clinically and immunologically distinctive disease
-
1 Whitcup SM, Vistica BP, Milam AH, Nussenblatt RB, Gery I: Recoverin-associated retinopathy: a clinically and immunologically distinctive disease. Am J Ophthalmol 1998, 126:230-237. These authors describe a patient with a clinical condition resembling CAR who also demonstrates a cellular immune response against the 23-kD retinal antigen recoverin. The patient has no evidence of active systemic malignancy. The authors propose that this clinical syndrome is distinct from CAR syndrome and have coined the term recoverin-associated retinopathy.

Cancer-associated retinopathy vs recoverin-associated retinopathy
-
2 Keltner JL, Thirkill CE: Cancer-associated retinopathy vs recoverin-associated retinopathy [editorial]. Am J Ophthalmol 1998, 126:296-302. This interesting editorial provides an excellent review of the history and clinical manifestations of CAR syndrome as well discussing the most recent immunologic observations concerning the role of retinal antigens in the pathogenesis of the disorder.

Antibodies to recoverin induce apoptosis of photoreceptor and bipolar cells in vivo
-
3 Adamus G, Machnicki M, Elerding H, Sugden B, Blocker YS, Fox DA: Antibodies to recoverin induce apoptosis of photoreceptor and bipolar cells in vivo. J Autoimmun 1998, 11:523-533. The authors of this investigation propose that the photoreceptor cell death in the CAR syndrome occurs through apoptosis and they provide substantial data from an in vivo model to support their hypothesis.
