Is tocolytic magnesium sulphate associated with increased total paediatric mortality?
-
Mittendorf R, Covert R, Boman J, Khoshnood B, Lee KS, Siegler M. Is tocolytic magnesium sulphate associated with increased total paediatric mortality? Lancet 1997; 350: 1517-1518. This commentary reported the interim findings of the MAGnet (magnesium and neurological endpoints trial), which tried to ascertain whether antenatal magnesium decreases the frequency of cerebral palsy in preterm infants. They found 10 out of 11 neonatal deaths in the magnesium groups of patients, and because of this the study was suspended.

If tocolytic magnesium sulphate is associated with excess total pediatric mortality, what is its impact?
-
Mittendorf R, Pryde P, Khoshnood B, Lee KS. If tocolytic magnesium sulphate is associated with excess total pediatric mortality, what is its impact? Obstet Gynecol 1998; 92: 308-311. This review article from the same authors who conducted the MAGnet trial reviewed the literature regarding neonatal deaths after antenatal exposure to magnesium. There is only one randomized trial of magnesium tocolysis that could support their findings but when deaths associated with congenital malformations were excluded there was no increased mortality in the magnesium group.
