    • Energy landscapes of receptor-ligand bonds explored with dynamic force spectroscopy
    • A highly innovative study of the response of a noncovalent bond between biotin and strepavidin to different force loading rates. The authors suggest that there may be several energy states in a high affinity bond that rapid force loading can expose, which decay rapidly if the loading rate is low. Carbohydrate-protein bonds might have disitinct mechanical characteristics compared to protein-protein bonds analyzed in this study

    • CD24 mediates rolling of breast carcinoma cells on P-selectin
    • Variants of CD24 that are sialylated support cell tethering and rolling interactions on P-selectin in shear flow whereas non-sialylated CD24 binds to P-selectin only under static conditions. Sialylation appears to impart a critical mechanical property to CD24 needed for rolling independent of CD24 binding to P-selectin. P-selectin therefore binds to two distinct receptors, one that is critical for inflammation and another that may be important in B-cell homing and in cancer

    • A direct comparison of selectin mediated transient adhesive events using high temporal resolution

Detection of millisecond duration selectin bond lifetimes under stress indicates that L-selectin bonds bearing 100 pN are more than an order of magnitude briefer than P-selectin and E-selectin bonds. The rapid dissociation rates of L-selectin bonds compared to those of the vascular selectins, P-selectin and E-selectin, may be critical for preventing blood borne leukocytes from pulling rolling leukocytes off the vessel wall and thereby minimizing leukocyte aggregation in the blood stream
