11. 13) were retained. There were 15 gaps in daily readings which were filled with means of the days before and after the missing days. The temperature data were then detrended before the analysis was performed. When the 20 sine waves with the greatest amplitude (of the total 4096 produced) are summed for example, the annual cycle is clearly reproduced (not illustrated here). 'Artefacts' are produced with wavelengths equal to the whole, a half, a quarter, one eighth etc. of the total time series, produced because the detrending uses a linear regression correction and the real line of best fit is not exactly linear. These are mostly of small amplitude and are ignored in the treatment described in the text.
