    • 8 Thompson RH, Fisher WW, Piazza CC, Kuhn DE. The evaluation and treatment of aggression maintained by attention and automatic reinforcement. J Appl Behav Anal 1998; 31:103-116. Functional communication training with extinction (related to attention) reduced all forms of aggression except one, which functional analysis indicated was maintained independent of contingencies. The hypothesis was that the remaining behaviour (chin grinding) was automatically reinforced. The authors provided an alternative source of reinforcement, resulting in a reduction in the problem behaviour.

J Appl Behav Anal 1998; 31:211-235. These authors studied 21 participants with a range of intellectual disabilities. Functional communication training without extinction was not particularly successful. Functional communication training with extinction resulted in 90% reductions of problem behaviour in 50% of clients. Functional communication training with punishment resulted in a 90% reduction in problem behaviour in 100% of clients.

    • 15 Fisher WW, Kuhn DE, Thompson RH. Establishing discriminative control of responding using functional and alternative reinforcers during functional communication training. J Appl Behav Anal 1998; 31:543-560. Two boys, aged 9 and 13 years, with moderate intellectual disabilities received functional communication training and differential reinforcement of communication. During the differential reinforcement of communication condition participants were taught to request the reinforcer. Differential reinforcement of communication rapidly reduced destructive behaviour with no extinction bursts.

J Appl Behav Anal 1998; 31:165-189. This study underlines the importance of using the outcome of the functional analysis to develop treatment. Noncontingent attention was the successful treatment tor socially maintained pica. Food and oral stimulation, following a stimulus preference assessment, were the successful treatments for pica maintained by automatic reinforcement.

    • Why behaviour analysts should study emotion: The example of anxiety
    • 48 Friman PC, Hayes SC, Wilson KG, Why behaviour analysts should study emotion: the example of anxiety. J Appl Behav Anal 1998;31:137-156. The current vagueness of definition of emotional concepts should not discourage behaviour analysts from engaging in such topics because the phenomena (emotions) are so central to human experience. Avoiding the study of emotion results in their being no proper behavioural analysis of the functional relations between environment and behaviour associated with emotion.

    • 52 Fantino E. Judgement and decision making: behavioural appoaches. Behav Analyst 1998; 21:203-218. Humans do not always make decisions in a logical way using all the available information in an optimal fashion. Behaviour analysis can help people increase motivation and reflect on the probabilities of outcome, which increases the effectiveness of decision making.
