Pediatrics 1999, 103:1183-1188. •• To identify Sociodemographic predictors of injury-related death and to compare trends in mortality rates among low- and high-risk infants, these investigators examined linked birth and death certificates from 1985 to 1991. Great disparities between high- and low-risk groups were noted.

N Engl J Med 1998, 339:813-818. •• Two separate random digit-dialing surveys of US residents were done in 1996 (1200 respondents) and 1997-1998 (1200 respondents) to ascertain public opinion on certain gun-control policies. Most respondents favored safety standards for new handguns, including childproofing (88%), magazine safeties (82%), personalization (71%), and loaded-chamber indicators (73%). Widespread support for policies designed to reduce the illegal sale of guns (eg, limitation of handgun purchases to one per month [81%] and mandatory registration of handguns [82%]) was also found. Support for these policies was seen among both gun owners and those who did not own guns.

    • Barkin S, Duan N, Fink A, Brook RH, Gelberg L: The smoking gun: do clinicians follow guidelines on firearm safety counseling? Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med 1998, 152:749-756. • This survey of primary care providers in Los Angeles indicates that most pediatricians believe that they should provide firearm counseling but only 38% actually do so. Firearm counseling was associated with younger clinician age, presence of a handgun in the clinician's household, and the clinician's belief that counseling is effective.

URL: http://www.pediatrics.org/cgi/content/full/102/5/e55. Accessed August 1, 1999. • Respondents to a 1994 random digit-dialing telephone survey of US residents were asked about receipt of age-appropriate injury-prevention counseling at a medical visit and safety-related practices for a child 0 to 14 years of age living in the household. Receipt of injury-prevention counseling was reported for 39.3% of all children who had had a medical visit in the past year. Receipt of counseling was associated with younger patient age, urban residence, and poverty.

    • Suecoff SA, Avner JR, Chou KJ, Crain EF: A comparison of New York City playground hazards in high and low-income areas. Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med 1999, 153:363-366. • To compare playground hazards in high- and low-income neighborhoods, these investigators assessed 45 New York City playgrounds by using Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) guidelines for public playground safety. Playgrounds in low-income districts had significantly more mean total hazards per play area (6.1 compared with 4.2) and more equipment-maintenance hazards per play area (2.1 compared with 1.0) compared with playgrounds in high-income neighborhoods.
