Most respondents favored safety standards for new handguns, including childproofing (88%), magazine safeties (82%), personalization (71%), and loaded-chamber indicators (73%). Widespread support for policies designed to reduce the illegal sale of guns (eg, limitation of handgun purchases to one per month [81%] and mandatory registration of handguns [82%]) was also found. Support for these policies was seen among both gun owners and those who did not own guns.

Firearm counseling was associated with younger clinician age, presence of a handgun in the clinician's household, and the clinician's belief that counseling is effective.

Receipt of injury-prevention counseling was reported for 39.3% of all children who had had a medical visit in the past year. Receipt of counseling was associated with younger patient age, urban residence, and poverty.
