2. Sankey M, Huoan GF. Investigating the role of alienation in a multicomponent model of juvenile delinquency. J Adolesc 1999; 22:95-107. One hundred and fifty-two adolescent persons, 78 females and 74 males, completed a battery of questionnaires designed to assess each of the variables in a proposed model of alienation. Several salient pathways to delinquency were identified; they included an environmental and person centred factors. Societal alienation rather than the general construct of alienation was found to have important explanatory power. The authors suggest that re-examining the model within a large-scale, time-extended study could inform programmes for the prevention and early intervention of delinquent behaviour.
3. Bailey S, Harbour A. The law and a child's consent to treatment (England and Wales). Child Psychol Psychiatry Rev 1998; 4:1-5. The authors explored the various forms of legislation as they apply to treatment of children and young people and how isuses of consent to treatment should be considered, weighing up the relative benefits of the application of the Mental Health Act the Children's Act and the role of the common law. The authors urge practitioners to consider the use of the Mental Health Act and its possible advantages where a young person is thought to be mentally ill.

London: Department of Health; 1999. This important document will greatly influence the shape of new mental health legislation, introducing a threshold for capacity at age 16 years to accept and refine treatment; representation of the young person should be by a specially trained litigation friend and in the case of children aged 10/12 to 16 years they suggest a rebuttable presumption of capacity.
6. Rutter M, Giller H, Hagel A. Antisocial behaviour by young people. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press; 1998. This major review of the international literature on ASB covers research findings published in the international literature on the advances and ways people think about ABS and its development. The availability of official statistics, and quality and complexity of research data, particularly follow-up of longitudinal studies, have meant that research can now inform both policy makers and practitioners. Particular use has been made of studies in the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, Sweden and Finland. It addresses those interventions most likely to reduce reoffending rates in young people.
7. Tiet QQ, Bird HR, Davies M, Haven C, Cohen P, Jenson PS, Goodman S. Adverse life events and resilience. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1998; 37:1191-1200. Resilient youths, using a household probability samples of youth age through to 17 years at four sites, received more guidance and supervision by their parents and lived in higher functioning families. Higher educationsl aspirations might have provided youth with a sense of direction and hope.

This major national survey, highlighted the perceived extent and severity of psychiatric disorders in young people placed within different parts of secure, locked provision for young people both social care and penal establishments. It also stressed the wish of nonhealth professionals to receive training, consultation and liaison services from both CAMHS and specialist adolescent forensic mental health services.

This important review provides a framework within and from which practitioners can consider and develop their own treatment interventions and monitor progress over time.

This paper asks us to take a closer look at conduct disorder, of subtypes of conduct disorder based on age of onset and what impact this may have for day to day clinical practice.

Erooga M, Masson H (editors). London: Routledge; 1999. pp. 179-210. The authors help in developing an understanding of the difficult issue of older children who sexually abuse other children, to make safe choices and take a balanced approach to perpetrators who are still themselves only children. They provide a helpful framework for individualized treatment interventions.
