Baltimore: Williams & Wilkins; 1998:1461-1505. This comprehensive review of nystagmus and saccadic intrusions discusses diagnosis and treatment in great detail. Classification by pathogenesis rather than observed waveform is emphasized. A wealth of references is provided for further study.

Cortical binocularity and monocular optokinetic asymmetry in early-onset esotropia
-
Westall CA, Eizenman M, Kraft SP, Panton CM, Chatterjee S, Sigesmund D: Cortical binocularity and monocular optokinetic asymmetry in early-onset esotropia. IOVS 1998, 39:1352-1360. This study of 14 infants with congenital esotropia and 16 normal control infants found that monocular optokinetic asymmetry did not correlate with cortical sensory fusion ability. This supports our personal experience that persistent OKN asymmetry is almost universal in patients with congenital esotropia despite early realignment and achievement of measurable stereopsis.

Nystagmus in periventricular leucomalacia
-
Jacobson L, Ygge J, Flodmark O: Nystagmus in periventricular leucomalacia. Br J Ophthalmol 1998, 82:1026-1032. In this review of 19 children who had periventricular leukomalacia documented by neuroimaging, all 19 had eye movements recorded by infrared reflection technique. Sixteen had measurable horizontal nystagmus. Of these 16 cases, six were grossly visible on clinical examination and nine required a visuscope or eye-movement recorder for identification.

Treatment of acquired nystagmus with botulinum A toxin
-
Helveston EM, Pogrebniak AE: Treatment of acquired nystagmus with botulinum A toxin. Am J Ophthalmol 1988, 106:584-586. Two patients with acquired nystagmus and bothersome oscillopsia were injected with 25 units of botulinum A toxin in a retrobulbar fashion. Both had improved vision for 5 to 13 weeks. Injections were repeated a total of five times without complications.

-
Lennerstrand G, Nordbo OA, Tian S, Eriksson-Derouet B, Ali T: Treatment of strabismus and nystagmus with botulinum toxin type A. Acta Ophthalmol Scand 1998, 76:2-37. In this large series of patients with strabismus or nystagmus treated by injection of botulinum A toxin, the most common side effects were ptosis (15%) and vertical strabismus (11%). Many patients (42%) subsequently had surgery, usually because of their response to injection.
