A Sinorhizobium meliloti lipopolysaccharide mutant induces effective nodules on the host plant Medicago sativa (alfalfa) but fails to establish a symbiosis with Medicago truncatula
-
A lipopolysaccharide mutant of S. meliloti is shown to form defective nodules on Medicago truncatula in which the infection threads are enlarged, the density of bacteroids is low, and the bacteroids are abnormal. The mutant, however, forms effective nodule on Medicago sativa. The possible role of a plant defense response is discussed.
