Soluble hla class i, hla class ii, and fas ligand in blood components: A possible key to explain the immunomodulatory effects of allogeneic blood transfusions
-
Of special interest Of outstanding interest 1 Ghio M, Contini P, Mazzei C, Brenci S, Barberis G, Filaci G, et al.: Soluble HLA class I, HLA class II, and Fas ligand in blood components: a possible key to explain the immunomodulatory effects of allogeneic blood transfusions. Blood 1999, 93:1770-1777. This article provides a new and highly interesting view on how allogeneic blood transfusions possibly could cause immunmodulatory effects. Despite the fact that the work reported is ex vivo, the data are promising and fit in the scientific modeling of immune effects following transfusion of allogeneic blood.

In Risk Factors in Blood Transfusion: A Virtue of Reality. Edited by Smit Sibinga CTh, Alter HJ. Dordrecht; Kluwer Academic Publishers; 1999 (in press). The authors are the first to clinically study the immunostimulatory and modulatory effects of aged leukocytes in red cell and platelet concentrates, and show indeed a weakening of the antigen presentation and related recipient response in a large prospective cohort of hematology patients.
