    • The research utilizes one of the largest environmental surveys to be carried out on manufacturing and processing industry in the United Kingdom. In the Autumn of 1996, 914 manufacturing and processing companies in Industrial South Wales were sent a questionnaire. Forty-two questions were asked covering a range of environmental issues relating to manufacturing industry. Detailed responses have been received from 420 companies (216 SMEs and 204 large companies) giving a response rate of 46%. This has been supplemented with interviews with selected companies and regulators. Further details of the survey can be found in [7].

    • SMEs are defined as companies with fewer than 250 employees world-wide, an annual turnover of less than ECU 40 million (around £32 million), an annual balance sheet total not exceeding ECU 27 million (around £21.6 million) and an upper level of 25% external ownership by companies which do not fit the other criteria [11]. Large companies are defined as those companies that exceed those criteria.
