The Hugoniot is the locus of density, pressure, and energy states in a material after passage of a single shock. It is a well-defined curve on the EOS surface. The compression (ratio of shocked to unshocked density) generally increases with pressure and approaches a value of 4 for an ideal gas in the high-pressure limit. The ratio can be greater than 4 when accounting for endothermic processes such as molecular excitations, dissociation, or ionization. At pressures above where these processes are complete, the compression must approach the ideal gas limit. EOSs for hydrogen isotopes are identical except for a scale factor in density.
