For a process requiring homolytic cleavage of a C-X bond, it is well supported that gas-phase and solution BDE's are essentially the same; see: Castelhano, A. L.; Griller, D. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1982, 104, 3655.

Relative BDE data are available from photoacoustic calorimetry: Clark, K. B.; Wayner, D. D. M. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1991, 113, 9363. The BDE of α-bromo-p-xylene is reported as 0.2 kcal/mol greater than that of the parent benzyl bromide. Being 61.2 kcal/mol the D(C-Br) of benzyl bromide, the D(C-Br) of α-bromo-p-xylene becomes 61.4 kcal/mol. The latter value has been used here, even though this slight difference is well within the uncertainty of the present determinations.
