The relaxation of hyperfine population due to photon scattering in a far-off-resonance trap has been investigated by CLINE R. A., MILLER J. D., MATTHEWS M. R. and HEINZEN D. J., Opt. Lett., 19 (1994) 207.

F substates is usually not very well defined because of laser field and polarization inhomogeneities, local interference effects, and residual magnetic fields.

note
-
The use of an acousto-optical modulator for fast optical switching (rise and fall time ∼ 100 ns) ensures that the fictitious field is turned on in a completely non-adiabatic way.

note
-
F = 0 population observed here without the fictitious-field pulse is about two times higher as expected from the above measurement of the trap-induced depolarization rate. This may be explained by experimental imperfections, like non-adiabatic changes of the field direction when the SG selecting field is turned on and off.
