Changes in energy balance and body composition at the menopause: A controlled longitudinal study
-
Poehlman ET, Toth MJ, Gardner AW. Changes in energy balance and body composition at the menopause: a controlled longitudinal study. Ann Int Med 1995; 123:673-675. The importance of this study is its longitudinal nature and measurement of both energy intake and energy expenditure in women undergoing the menopause transition. The inclusion of a control group (i.e. premenopausal women) showed that the menopause accelerated the increase in total and central body fatness and the decline in resting and physical activity energy expenditure.

Metabolic determinants of the decline in resting metabolic rate in aging females
-
Poehlman ET, Goran MI, Gardner AW, Ades PA, Arciero PJ, Katzman-Rooks SM, et al. Metabolic determinants of the decline in resting metabolic rate in aging females. Am J Physiol 1993; 264:E450-E455. This study showed that the age-related decline in resting metabolic rate and fat-free mass is non-linear. That is, postmenopausal women had an accelerated loss of fat-free mass compared with premenopausal women which probably contributed to their rapid decline in resting metabolic rate.

Weight gain at the time of menopause
-
Wing RR, Matthews KA, Kuller LH, Meilahn EN, Plantinga PL. Weight gain at the time of menopause. Arch Intern Med 1991; 151:97-102. This longitudinal study challenged the notion that menopause is associated with weight gain. These authors found that, although women gained body weight with aging, there was no significant difference in weight gain between women who remained premenopausal and those who had a natural menopause.

Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy prevents central distribution of body fat after menopause
-
Haarbo J, Marsley U, Gotfredsen A, Christiansen C. Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy prevents central distribution of body fat after menopause. Metabolism 1991; 40:1321-1326. This study showed that hormone replacement therapy attenuated the increase in central body fatness. This finding suggests that the cardioprotective effects of hormone replacement therapy may be partially mediated by preventing the increase in intra-abdominal body fat.

-
Matthews KA, Meilahn E, Kuller LH, Kelsey LS, Caggiula AW, Wing RR. Menopause and risk factors for coronary heart disease. N Engl J Med 1989; 321:641-646. The large sample size and longitudinal design of this study is impressive. This study convincingly shows that the natural menopause transition has an unfavourable effect on lipid metabolism which may contribute to an increase in the risk of coronary disease.
