Originally used during the Freedom movement, swadeshi meant political and economic freedom from British colonialism. In the context of globalization today it means "self-reliance," particularly protection of domestic producers' interests, often in the form of import barriers.

note
-
Jayalalitha, leader of the AIADMK, has claimed that the BJP leadership had promised dissolution of the DMK government while forming the coalition (Times of India [New Delhi], June 20, 1998). This demand has been renewed following the government's attempts to impose President's Rule in Bihar. These attempts have led to a series of conflicts with the BJP's alliance in Bihar, the Samata Party. Since joining the alliance, Samata Party leaders have been torn between working to retain Bihar's current boundaries, contrary to the BJP's manifest support for carving a Vananchal state out of southern Bihar, and working with the BJP to wrest control of the current Bihar state government from Laloo Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal.
