My thanks to Gretchen Poiner for her insightful comments. I'd also like to thank the Women's Studies Honours IV class of 1997 for their enthusiasm and passion for feminist ideas.

This is merely anecdotal. However, given the fact that most new appointments are at junior levels and tend to be contract positions, it is not far-fetched to think that, in the near future, Women's Studies departments will tend to get younger in terms of their teaching staff profiles.

Elsewhere, Sedgwick has usefully elaborated on the way in which 'knowingness' in our culture is the refuge of the ignorant, the homophobe and the racist, thus demonstrating how ignorance and knowingness are interrelated. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Tendencies (Duke University Press) Durham, NC, 1993.
