52. We consider only the case of substitutional carbon in the lattice. This is the dominant mechanism for incorporation at low C contents and seems to be essential for quality device applications. The amount of interstitial carbon rises with C content and, along with the appearance of stacking defects, is responsible for the degradation in the quality of these materials.
