There is no separate census tabulation for clerks, but workers in commercial occupations included about 70 percent clerks, the remainder being shop workers, salesclerks, and miscellaneous nonmanual workers.

note
-
The introduction of a charge for cross-entries no doubt would have discouraged the rise in their number. However, the introduction of a charge for withdrawing a depositor's own money would have been unthinkable in the thrift movement and would have encountered massive political resistance. With the single exception of telegraphic withdrawals, the POSB and the TSBs were always free at the point of use.

-
Although the bank did not maintain a "perpetual balance" system, this rarely required a clerk to calculate an exact balance when validating a withdrawal. The clerk merely had to ensure that there were sufficient funds to meet the withdrawal, which normally could be done by inspection.
