A completely randomized experimental design was used for all measured parameters. Main effects and interactions for all parameters were analyzed separately within each breeder hen age period (52 and 62 wk). Posthatch performance parameters were determined within each breeder age independently due to variations in brooder conditions. Breeder hen diet served as the whole plot factor and eggshell treatment as the subplot factor. Individual bird data in each pen were averaged to provide replicate means prior to analysis. Main effect means were compared by Fisher's protected LSD, and if interactions of independent variables were significant, subclass means were compared by least square means [21]. Angular transformations (arcsine of the square root of the proportion affected) were performed on all percentage data before analysis. Broiler liver weight at 22 days, water/feed consumption ratio between 0 and 13 days, water consumption between 0 and 14 days, and feed conversion, feed consumption, and relative BW gain over the entire 21-day growout period were analyzed by split-plot analysis with a 6 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments which tested for the effects of breeder diet (whole plot), cuticle treatment (subplot), and their interactions. All data were analyzed using the GLM procedure on SAS software, Version 6.12 [22]. Statements of significance were based on P <.05, unless otherwise indicated.
