These variables are not the only operationalizations of the idea of exposure to democratic values that can be generated with the data at hand. Alternatives include using the proportion of one's life or educational experience that took place under democratic conditions or weighing the years of exposure or the proportional exposure by some indicator of the extent of democracy, such as the 3-point rating published by the Freedom Review (1991). Testing showed that neither of these approaches provides any significant improvement, however.
