48. Note that the S-layer in Gram-positive bacteria, such as B. coagulans, is attached to a peptidoglycan-containing layer, not the cytoplasmatic lipid membrane. The term "natural orientation" is used here to indicate that the face of the S-layer attached to the monolayer in the reconstituted system is the one oriented toward the cell in vivo.
