Physiological and genetic analysis indicated that the same mutation confers insensitivity to ethylene, supporting the hypothesis that ethylene is a component of the signaling pathway controlling rhizobial infection of legumes.

Ethylene insensitive transgenic tobacco plants, obtained by overexpression of the Arabidopsis etr1-1 mutant gene, showed sensitivity to normally nonpathogenic soil-borne fungi.

Using the tomato Never ripe mutant, the authors showed that ethylene insensitive plants exhibited a significant reduction in disease symptoms in comparison to the wild-type, indicating that ethylene is involved in the regulation of the susceptible response to pathogens in tomato.
