    • It should be noted that the alloy core levels are slightly broader than those of the pure metal. This broadening is most probably due to chemical inhomogeneity effects as well as the unresolved surface versus bulk binding energy shift under our experimental resolution. These effects, however, are small compared with the observed shift and are within the experimental uncertainty.
