    • note
    • Note that use of DSC to carry out polymerizations requires great care in three key respects. First, one must ensure that the sample pans remain sealed throughout the polymerization, which we have found necessitates the use of special highpressure pans. Second, one must perform a temperature calibration using standards having thermal transitions at temperatures low enough to be in the general range in which the experiments are performed. Third, for isothermal runs, the calibration must be generated using as low a heating rate as possible; our approach has been to measure melting points at several different heating rates, and extrapolate to zero heating rate to determine the actual values used in the calibration. Fractional conversion is determined by monitoring the heat released as a function of time and comparing with the total heat released when all monomer has reacted.

    • note
    • crit is in potentially altering the concentration dependence of the diffusion of the chains undergoing termination (translational diffusion of very short chains has a weaker concentration dependence than that of Rouse chains, while translational diffusion of very long, entangled chains has a stronger concentration dependence than that of Rouse chains.) Such effects are considered in refs 27 and 53.
