Equation (3) gives a deformation associated with any single self-trapped state, which can be a lower or upper occupied state and, of course, this is not the total deformation associated with all occupied states. The total deformation consists of a summation of deformations associated with all occupied self-trapped states. However in this sum the largest contribution came from the upper filled state.
