    • In this essay we refer to communities as groups outside of academia in order to stress the need for women's studies programs to take a step back in terms of maintaining control over research topics, research methods, and research outcomes. We maintain that women's studies also needs to acknowledge the work of feminist activists outside the university by taking a step forward in terms of offering financial support and access to resources. Ultimately, the goal of action-oriented research is to make connections between university communities and communities outside academia.

    • Although women enter undergraduate programs in numbers equal to men, their dropout rates are higher at each level of the academic hierarchy, so that fewer tenured faculty are women. In addition, women's participation continues to be severely limited in specific traditionally male-dominated fields.
