    • Lochmann L, Frechet JMJ: Controlled functionalization of polystyrene; introduction of reactive groups by multisite metalation with superbase and reaction with electrophiles. Macromolecules 1996, 29:1767-1771. The use of a superbase was shown to be a more controlled method for melalation of linear polystyrene relative to the standard alkyllithium/N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) procedure. Rapid conversion at room temperature occurs with high selectivity. This should provide an alternative approach for resin modification by the metalation/quench route.

Short routes to binding functional groups to polystyrene resin through a dimethylene spacer: bromine, sulfur, phosphorous, silicon, hydrogen, boron, and oxygen. J Org Chem 1997, 62:8987-8993. Macroporous polymers with high divinylbenzene content were synthesized and shown to have significant residual vinyl groups. These were functionalized using single-step and two-step transformations to afford a variety of functional resins.

Edited by Wilson SR, Czarnik AW. New York: Wiley & Sons Inc; 1997:135-152. Chemical and radiofrequency methods of encoding are discussed. The solid support and a microelectronic memory/transmitter are enclosed in a microreactor, functioning as the polymer object. Information stored in the tag is accessed remotely (75-150 mm) by a reader.
