Engineered biosynthesis of an eight-membered ring tetraketide lactone. J Am Chem Soc 1997, 119:11339-11340. This paper demonstrates two very interesting possibilities: increase in the extent of keto group modification and the formation of an eight-membered lactone ring.

Biochemistry 1997, 36:13849-13855. In a mechanistic study it was shown that ketone synthase domains fall into two types: those that epimerise the methyl branching centre and those that do not. This observation is important for attempts to alter the chirality of chain extension.
