Cloning and characterization of plastidal and mitochondrial isoform of tobacco protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase
-
Lermontova I, Kruse E, Mock HP, Grimm B: Cloning and characterization of plastidal and mitochondrial isoform of tobacco protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1997,94:8895-8900. This paper provides substantial evidence for two isoenzymes involved in heme synthesis in plastids and mitochondria. Analysis of recombinant wildtype and mutant enzyme activities will clarify the reaction mechanism and the mode of action of the photodynamic inhibitors of protoporphyrinogen oxidase.

Conversion of chlorophyll b to chlorophyll a and the assembly of chlorophyll with apoproteins by isolated chloroplasts
-
Ohtsuka T, Ito H, Tanaka A: Conversion of chlorophyll b to chlorophyll a and the assembly of chlorophyll with apoproteins by isolated chloroplasts. Plant Physiol 1997, 113:137-147. This paper follows a number of previous reports on the characterization of the chlorophyll b to chlorophyll a conversion and carefully dissects this enzymatic step.

Yeast 5-aminolevulinate synthase provides additional chlorophyll precursor in transgenic plants
-
Zavgorodnyaya A, Papenbrock J, Grimm B: Yeast 5-aminolevulinate synthase provides additional chlorophyll precursor in transgenic plants. Plant J 1997, 12:169-178. A bypass mechanism of endogenous ALA synthesis is presented and opens new strategies to define feedback mechanisms on ALA formation and to generate plants with additional and inhibitor-insensitive ALA-synthesizing capacity.
