    • The decomposition of forces assumed is standard. There is, however, a fundamental problem in a separation of electrostatic and van der Waals forces, even at the level of the primitive model, as described in Ninham, B. W.; Yaminsky, V. Langmuir 1997, 13, 2097-2108. The dissociation equilibrium condition for counterions is a phenomenological way to account for this difficulty, when taken together with a Lifshitz type expression the van der Waals forces, which are then treated in a linear theory.
