56. The expression for Abel inversion involves an integral of the first derivative of the measured line-integrated quantity, phase shift in this case. The method used in this paper relies on second derivative smoothing of the experimental data: depending on a variable parameter, the algorithm averages neighboring points to a larger or lesser degree, thereby preventing high-frequency, point-to-point phase fluctuations from distorting the result.
